civil rights vs national security
Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, a national debate has erupted over the proper balance between tighter national security and civil rights. Everyone wants security, but as Ben Franklin said, "Those who give up liberty for the sake of security deserve neither liberty no security" (quotegarden.com). Today, the debate is even hotter, because of the passing of a bill called Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism, or more commonly known as the Patriot act. . The problem with this bill is that it not only infringes on civil rights, but also displaces laws designed to protect civil rights.
